Preventive Dentistry Habits For A Healthy New Year

Welcome back to another January edition of our oral health blog! Don’t forget to schedule your 2016 dental appointments, as these are an important component of your overall wellness.

At Dynamic Dental Solutions of Baytown, Texas, we know that the first step towards having a beautiful smile is by maintaining a clean and healthy mouth.

This is why we offer preventative dentistry services for the whole family and we love to strengthen the good habits that you should be practicing at home in between your regular office visits.

New Year’s Habit #1

Brushing your teeth diligently, at least two times a day, is the only way to keep bacteria, disease, and decay from completely overtaking your mouth. It is your basic defense from bad things! Still, brushing is only the beginning!

New Year’s Habit #2

If you don’t want to experience tooth loss and decay, set aside a few minutes every day for flossing. Dental floss can reach those areas where a toothbrush just can’t go. And those are precisely the areas where plaque and tartar love to congregate!

New Year’s Habit #3

Getting in the groove of rinsing with mouthwash takes less than a minute and will leave you feeling healthy and fresh. Most mouthwashes can be helpful for reducing the sort of bacteria that contributes to decay. It is even better when they contain fluoride because fluoride promotes tooth retention, which is definitely a good thing for your smile.

New Year’s Habit #4

Resolve to visit the dentist every 3-6 months. Regular exams and teeth cleanings are essential for optimizing your oral (and general) health. Our friends at the American Dental Association think you should be coming in for a checkup every six months, at a minimum.

Sometimes a professional dental cleaning is the only thing that can successfully remove residual tartar and plaque from your mouth, after your hard work at home.

In addition to cleaning your teeth, we also conduct a thorough examination of your mouth each time you visit our comfortable office. This allows us to poke around for any signs of decay, any indications of gum disease, and the tell-tale signs of oral cancer, as well as other causes for alarm.

It is always better to address things before they become more painful and costly to deal with!

New Year’s Habit #5

Stay in-tune with your body’s needs. No matter how bad things are, it is always better to confront the reality of your situation. This certainly applies to the dental world, too.

This year, try to get out of the habit of making excuses or avoiding dealing with your oral health needs. If you have dental anxiety, let us know, and we will try to put your fears to rest.
